Green Roof Systems: A Guide to the Planning, Design, and Construction of Landscapes over Structure
Green Roof Systems: A Guide to the Planning, Design, and Construction of Landscapes over Structure

Green Roof Systems: A Guide to the Planning, Design, and Construction of Landscapes over Structure

Authors: Susan K. Weiler and Katrin Scholz-Barth

Green Roof Systems: A Guide to the Planning, Design, and Construction of Landscapes over Structure, is a resource for design teams and construction consultants, covering design and construction considerations for the installation of landscapes over plaza decks, parking structures, below-grade structures, vegetative roofing systems, and other structures.

Coauthor Susan Weiler, ASLA, is a partner at OLIN, a Philadelphia landscape architectural and design firm, and developed the landscape engineering and construction curriculum at Temple University in Philadelphia. Coauthor Katrin Scholz-Barth is a consultant based in Washington, DC, was formerly director of dustainable design for the HOK Planning Group, and has taught at Harvard and the University of PA. Both authors received the 2003 Green Roof Award of Excellence for the Montgomery Park project in Baltimore, MD.

For roofing and waterproofing consultants, this book provides perspective from city scale to project scale. This perspective may be useful for consultants who want to improve their understanding of macro social and political thought driving the consideration of vegetated systems. It does not, however, provide entirely accurate information on the waterproofing and weight-bearing aspects affecting landscapes over structures.

The book is helpful for individuals concerned with choosing the right plants. Anyone involved with vegetated systems is encouraged to read this book and become proactive in the industry to address the misconceptions this book conveys.

 Historic and Obsolete Roofing Tile
Historic and Obsolete Roofing Tile

The primary purpose of Vincent Hobson's Historic and Obsolete Roofing Tile: Preserving the history of roofing tiles is to identify tile, but it also provides some brief but interesting information and history on some of the largest and better known tile manufacturers throughout the United States. If one had only the photo section and the tile-identifying chart, a vast number of tiles could be recognized. This book would be a valuable asset to a designer, contractor, or historian who is striving to preserve the architectural and historical dignity of a building covered by a tile roof system.

* Published by Remai Publishing Company, Inc. of Evergreen, Colorado in 2001.

* Contains 254 pages, of which 118 pages are dedicated to color pictures of clay and concrete field tiles, taken alongside a scaled measuring device for size reference, along with various ridges, closures, terminals, finials, valleys and other special tile shapes.

* Charts that are referenced to the photographs, giving such information as tile name, length, width, average pieces per square, and average weight per square.

About the Authors
For over twenty years, author Vincent Hobson has been researching, collecting, and inventorying historic and obsolete roofing tiles, and installing tile-roofing systems. Hobson is Custom Tile Roofing, Inc., in the Denver area, offers tile restoration and repair, technical assistance, roof system design, and consulting services throughout the United States. Hobson instructs continuing education classes which include identification, damage assessment, and reparability of clay and concrete tile roofs.

Associate author Melvin Mann and his son, Adam, operate TileSearch, Inc. in Roanoke, Texas, which provides both sellers and buyers a marketplace for historic and obsolete tile. Mr. Mann is active in the identification and specification of historic and reproduction tiles and was the pioneer in computerizing a national database for historic tile.

Both authors have a strong commitment to maintaining and preserving both the architectural and historical integrity of old tile roofs and both have been professionally involved in structures that have historical designations.
