RCI - First Five Years
RCI: The First Five Years details the history of RCI from its earliest days. Published by the association in 1989, it was written with a chatty, personal flair by RCI’s first executive director, William C. Correll, AIA, FRCI.
Correll takes the reader on an historical tour of RCI, from the spark of an idea in the mind of Robert W. Lyons in 1979, through the first official RCI (then N.A.R.C.S.) organizational meeting in 1981, on to the election of its first officers and the receipt of RCI’s nonprofit organizational charter from the state of North Carolina in May 1983.
Filled with Correll’s observations and amusing antecdotes about the shoestring birth and steady growth of the fledgling association and its founding fathers, the soft-cover booklet includes photos of early officers and lists of committee chairpersons and regional officers. It chronicles the organization’s first board meetings, conventions, and registration examinations and reviews the challenges facing the infant association.
The reader will learn many interesting tidbits about RCI, such as:
- There were more committees than paid RCI members in 1983.
- Strictly a volunteer, Correll logged 1,067 hours in 1985 alone for $0. He did not draw a salary until he had worked as a volunteer for over 3 years.
- In 1987, the board of directors actually voted to move RCI headquarters to Dallas, Texas.
